Roasted Potato Anyone?

"Ma please stop", she said, batting away her mother's hand as she kept fussing over her. She had just gotten off a 12-hour flight and the thin line differentiating between endearing and annoying was practically non-existent. Maybe once she went home, she thought, once she slept off the cabin hangover, and had a long hot shower while shaking her booty to the latest Jason Derulo, she would feel better. She would be able to filter out her father standing next to her, looking her top to bottom with a fatherly pseudo-disgust look on his face, telling her to do more crunches.

Sitting in the car, she faded away from the present, thinking about last weekend. Her exams had just gotten over, one day before her birthday, and she and her roommate had hosted a party in their dorm room. It wasn't especially huge, but it was the most fun she had had in weeks. She had felt like herself, felt independent and free, like her own person. So much had happened in the past semester. It was a year of her firsts, her first boyfriend, her first dorm room, her first time of sex, her first time drinking, her first overnight trip with friends..... Right then she was jerked out of reminiscing by her mother asking if she wanted to eat something. Looking out, she saw them parked in front of a bakery. The sweet smell of baked muffins and warm chocolate was like an elixir that warmed her very veins. Eagerly, she jumped out of the car and ordered a fuck-ton of cookies and doughnuts, because of course, cabin food sucks. That's when her father decides to talk to her, mouth stuffed with the butterscotch cake he ordered, about a video he saw linking carbs with obesity, atherosclerosis and heart diseases. She found herself sitting there like a zombie, doughnut sugar smeared all over her lips, blindly nodding, her self-confidence breaking down bit by bit as she felt her mother hand her a napkin and point at the little icing smear, "act like a grown up". A dark side inside of her smirked, thinking if only they knew how much she'd grown. But then her compulsive nature to please her parents took over, and she sat there, taking it all in without a word, accepting everything thrown at her as they drove home.

Reaching home, she felt a flicker of life inside her as she saw her room. She smiled at her phone as it connected to the wifi and her friends had texted her, welcoming her back, already making plans to get together. Somewhere in the next room, she could hear faint voices, in heated tones, constituting words like the credit card, annual expenditure and so on.

Closing the door, she lay in her bed, blocking out all the voices, cocooning in her duvet as her mind replayed her entire journey back home from the airport, every word feeling like needles scratching her from the inside, as she drifted into deep dreamless sleep.
